Flynn fell to his knees in front of me, grabbing the hem of my wine-stained dress with trembling,
desperate hands.
“Mabel, please! I was stupid! Selina manipulated me! She made me think you didn’t care about the business!”
Flynn sobbed frantically, the polished,
arrogant CEO completely reduced to a groveling coward in front of Manhattan’s entire elite circle.
“I love you! We’ve been married for ten years! Give me one more chance!”
I looked down at him, feeling no anger,
no sadness only an overwhelming, weightless freedom.
I slowly stepped back, pulling the hem of my dress from his grip.
“You threw your wedding ring at my feet thirty minutes ago, Flynn,” I said smoothly.
“You told me I was worth less than your mistress’s dress.”
Arthur stepped forward, handing Flynn a pen and a set of legal documents.
“These are your formal termination papers,
along with an immediate eviction order and a civil suit for the recovery of four point six million dollars in embezzled corporate funds,” Arthur informed him.
“Federal marshals are waiting outside to escort you to the precinct for questioning regarding the forged vendor wires.”
Two marshals stepped forward, clicking metal handcuffs around Flynn’s wrists.
Fiona began wailing hysterically, clutching her son’s arm as the marshals pulled him toward the exit.
The very partners, board members,
and guests who had been singing Flynn’s praises moments earlier pulled out their phones,
recording every second of his public downfall.
Selina tried to slip out through a side service door,
but two female officers intercepted her immediately,
informing her that she was being detained as a co-conspirator in the corporate fraud investigation.
Flynn turned his head back toward me as he was led away,
tears streaming down his face, screaming my name across the silent ballroom.
I didn’t answer. I simply turned away.
EPILOGUE
Six months later.
The morning sun flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse office at Vance Global Enterprises.
I sat at the head of the mahogany executive table,
officially stepping into my role as Executive Chairwoman of the board. Beside me sat Arthur,
reviewing the quarterly financial reports.
Under transparent leadership and proper corporate governance,
the company had fully recovered the embezzled funds,
restored employee bonuses, and reached an all-time high valuation.
Flynn’s fall had been absolute. Facing indisputable digital and financial paper trails,
he pled guilty to corporate embezzlement and wire fraud,
receiving a seven-year sentence in a federal facility.
To satisfy the civil judgments,
his personal investments and assets were fully liquidated.
He was currently serving his time, stripped of his status,
his money, and his name.
Fiona was forced to move into a small, rented studio apartment in New Jersey,
living on a modest state pension, completely shunned by the social circles she had sacrificed everything to impress.
Selina accepted a plea bargain requiring full financial restitution and three years of probation,
her luxury lifestyle entirely dismantled.
My divorce was finalized in three months.
I kept my inheritance,
my family’s firm, and my home.
Arthur set a fresh cup of coffee on my desk,
along with a newly minted corporate directory.
“The board unanimously approved the new medical research grant in your father’s name this morning, Mabel.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” I smiled,
looking at my father’s old brass compass resting on the mahogany desk.
I stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window,
looking out over the breathtaking skyline of Manhattan.
The sky was brilliant, clear, and cloudless.
Flynn and his family had spent ten years believing that my silence was submission,
never realizing that the power they flaunted was merely a gift I had allowed them to borrow.
I took a slow, deep breath of the cool air, knowing that the empire was finally secure,
the past was behind me, and the controls of my life belonged unconditionally to me.
